Iasi, the former capital of Moldavia, is the most important historical, economic, and cultural center in Northeast Romania. The archaeological researches have discovered
in this area traces of the ancient Culture of Cucuteni, flourishing about 5000 years ago.
Iasi City is documentary certified from the 14th century during the reign of Alexandru cel Bun. The name of Iasi City is bound up with the
so-called "golden period" of the Romanian culture.
In 1562, Moldavia has become famous for the first attempts to lay the foundation of what later on had become higher education, all thanks to the setting up of the Latin School at Cotnari, near Iasi. Still, it was not until 1813 that the scholar Gheorghe Asachi founded the first school of land surveyors and civil engineers with instruction in the Romanian language. This school can be considered the core of the technical higher education in Moldova. Later on, the school is developed within the Michaellian Academy (1835). In 1860 Al.I.Cuza founded, in Iasi, the first university within Romania.
Iasi is well known as a major cultural city of Romania.
